In 1985, he graduated from the Department of Biology, Fudan University with a bachelor's degree in genetics; in 1987, he graduated with a master's degree in genetics from the Institute of Genetics, Fudan University; in 1994, he received a doctorate in biomedical science/genetics from the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center; from 1994 to 1996 in Postdoctoral research in Medical Genetics, Stanford University School of Medicine. He used to be the first theoretical professor and associate professor (tenure-track) of Human Molecular Genetics in the Human Genetics Center of the School of Public Health at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and the environmental health of the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine. Department of Genome Information Center Professor (tenure-track), President of the American Society of Chinese Genetics (05-06). After returning to China, he served as Distinguished Professor of Fudan University, Deputy Director of Morgan-Tan Jiazhen International Life Science Research Center, Deputy Director of National Genome Research South Center, Deputy Dean of Fudan University Biomedical Research Institute and Director of Genome Research Institute, Fudan University Dean of the School of Life Sciences.

He is currently a member of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Ministry of Education, a foreign member of the Max Planck Society in Germany, a director of the International Human Genome Organization (HUGO), the chairman of the Shanghai Genetics Society and the chairman of the Shanghai Anthropological Society. Editor-in-Chief of "Human Genomics" (UK) (2002-2007), Deputy Editor-in-Chief of "Journal of Human Genetics" (Japan) and "China Eugenics" (China), "Annual Journal of Human Genetics" (UK), "Human Biology" "(USA), "Mutation Research" (USA), "Chinese Journal of Medical Genetics" (China), "Chinese Frontiers of Biology" (China), "Journal of Anthropology" (Croatia) and other journals.
